Former England captain Root stood firm, scoring an unbeaten 106 off 226 balls to halt the charge of the home team bowlers on a day when debutant pacer Akash Deep tormented the visitors by dismissing both the openers -Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett in the morning and returning figures of 3/70 to make a dream debut.

Ollie Robinson (31 not out) was with Root at stumps.

Earlier, England was suffering at 112/5 after being dismissed by the 27-year-old Akash Deep. But, Root and Ben Foakes contributed 113 runs for the sixth wicket to get the team out of danger.

After a no-ball setback, Akash Deep made his Test debut in lien of rested pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. He dismissed Ben Duckett (11), Ollie Pope (0), and Zak Crawley (42) to leave England reeling at 57 for 3.

Before being stranded in front by Ravichandran Ashwin (1/17) after Jonny Bairstow hammered a 35-ball 38 with four boundaries and a six.

India controlled the morning session, with captain Ben Stokes being caught in front of the wicket by Ravindra Jadeja (1/28).

India is up 2-1 in the five-match Test series.
