Pat Cummins, who led Australia to two significant ICC trophies in 2023 the World Cup and the ICC World Test Championship, both against India has been named Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) new captain in the 2024 Indian Premier League.

At the IPL 2024 auctions, Sunrisers Hyderabad paid INR 20.5 Crore for the Australian captain, marking him the first player in IPL history to be sold for at least INR 20 Crore. However, Kolkata Knight Riders paid INR 24.75 crore to get his Australian teammate Mitchell Starc.

In the previous two seasons, South African batsman Aiden Markram captained the Hyderabad-based squad, but he was unable to lead them to any kind of success. Therefore, the SRH think-tank, headed by Daniel Vettori, the new head coach, has chosen to give Cummins the keys to the team.

It makes perfect sense for SRH to select Cummins as their captain given his background as an international captain. The fact that Australia has performed well in recent years both in big tournaments and bilateral series is evidence of Cummins’ outstanding leadership.

Furthermore, considering that the two collaborated when Australia named the former New Zealand spinner as their assistant coach, Vettori would also want Cummins to be the captain. Markram guided Sunrisers Eastern Cape to victory in the SA20 earlier this year, but Cummins is appointed to take the SRH leadership in IPL 2024.

Steyn to Miss IPL 2024

The bowling coach for SRH, Dale Steyn, has requested a leave of absence, meaning he won’t be there for the next season. In the meanwhile, if all goes according to plan, he should be back with the team in the IPL in 2025.
