R Ashwin Makes Record on Day 1

As the first Indian bowler to reach 100 wickets in Test matches against England, veteran off-spinner R Ashwin once again made history.

On Friday, February 23, the 37-year-old accomplished the feat on the first day of the fourth Test at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi. In Test cricket, Ashwin took out Jonny Bairstow (38 off 35) to reach 100 wickets against England.

At the challenging surface Ranchi clash, India controlled the opening session, reducing the visitors to 112/5 by lunch after England won the toss and elected to bat first.

In 22nd over of the innings, Bairstow looked threatening for a change, but Ashwin trapped him leg before wicket.

The England right-hander was hit in the rear thigh after failing to complete the sweep. Although ball-tracking unmistakably demonstrated that the ball was striking the stumps, on-field umpire Rod Tucker did not raise his finger.

Bairstow has before shown aggressive behaviour against Ashwin. The England batsman slog-swept a maximum over deep midwicket in the off-spinner’s first delivery. Bairstow hit a four off a short ball in front of square in the bowler’s subsequent over. But on the very next ball, Ashwin exacted his wrath by trapping him leg before.

In the opening session of England’s first innings in Ranchi on Friday, Bairstow was the fourth wicket to go. Before then, Akash Deep, a rookie bowler, stunned the guests by taking three wickets.

After trapping Ollie Pope in front of the stumps for a duck and dismissing Ben Duckett for 11, the right-arm bowler went on to remove Zak Crawley for a run-a-ball score of 42.

Left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja caught England skipper Ben Stokes (3) leg before wicket with one that remained extremely low and caused the visitors to lose half their side by lunchtime on Day 1.

Ashwin finishes with 100 wickets in 23 Test matches vs England.

In 23 Test matches against England, Ashwin reaches 100 wickets. Playing in his 23rd encounter against England, Ashwin claimed his 100th wicket in a Test match. So far against England, he has amassed six five-fers and one match haul of ten wickets.

The Indian bowler who has taken the most wickets against England in Test matches is none other than the renowned former leg-spinner Bhagwath Chandrasekhar. He had eight five-wicket hauls and captured 95 scalps at an average of 27.27 in 23 matches.

Anil Kumble, a former leg-spinner, rounds up the top three. With four five-fers and one 10-wicket match haul, the former captain of India collected 92 wickets at an average of 30.59 in 19 Test matches.
