Babar Azam failed to get Pakistan past the group stage of an ICC event for the second time in a row. Pakistan was knocked out of the running to qualify for the Super Eight of the T20 World Cup earlier this week following losses to the USA and India in the group stage, following its league-stage departure from the 2023 ODI World Cup last November. The 2009 winners’ early withdrawal put Babar’s status as white-ball captain up in the air. Speaking to the media following a nervous match against Ireland on Sunday in Florida, Babar discussed his future as the team’s captain in addition to defending his captaincy at the World Cup.
“When I gave up the captaincy [in 2023], I thought that I shouldn’t be doing it now, that’s why I left it and I announced it myself,” Babar stated. “It was the PCB’s choice when they returned it to me. We shall talk about everything that has happened here when I return. In addition, I will make a public announcement if I must resign as captain. I’m not going to duck behind anything. Everything that occurs will take place in public. However, I haven’t given it much thought as of yet. In the end, PCB makes the decision.

The Pakistani opener declined to accept blame for his country’s third group-stage elimination in T20 World Cups, blaming instead the team’s overall lack of performance rather than the actions of a single individual.

“I told you that we did not lose this because of one particular person,” Babar said. “As a team, we both win and lose. You are pointing out that even though I am the captain, I am not able to fill the shoes of every player. Every one of the eleven players has a certain function. They came here to play in the World Cup for that reason. We haven’t been able to perform effectively together, in my opinion. We need to come to terms with the fact that we didn’t play well.
“We acknowledge that our performance fell short of what was expected of us. Our team’s composition and experience have prevented us from delivering at different times. As a leader and a player, I will not single [someone] out. All fifteen are at fault. We’ll take a seat and go over. It is my duty as a captain to provide the decision-makers with my input.”
Pakistan placed third in the T20 World Cup group stage. Even though they recovered to defeat Canada and Ireland in their final two games, their elimination was made official when Friday’s rain-related cancellation of the USA vs. Ireland match occurred.
