On Monday, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rendered a comprehensive decision, rejecting Vinesh Phogat’s appeal on her disqualification from the 2024 Olympic Games women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling final. After being disqualified, Vinesh had applied for a joint silver medal; however, CAS maintained the ruling, stressing that competitors must rigorously follow weight limits, with no exceptions permitted.

Prior to her necessary second-day weigh-in for the gold medal match versus Sarah Hildebrandt ,she was discovered to be 100 grams overweight. According to CAS, there is no tolerance for going above the top limit and the weight of the singlet is not taken into account. The weight restriction regulations are explicit and apply to all athletes equally. CAS underlined that it is the athlete’s duty to make sure they don’t exceed the recommended limit.

“There’s no denying that the petitioner weighed more than the permitted amount. During the hearing, she provided direct and unambiguous testimony,” the CAS statement stated. “Her case argued that the excess was minimal only 100 grams and that a tolerance should apply, given factors like water retention, particularly during the pre-menstrual phase.”

IOA promised to support Vinesh

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) expressed sadness at the CAS verdict and promised to assist Vinesh Phogat going forward. The strict rules have drawn criticism from IOA President PT Usha, who described them as “inhumane” and pointed out that they ignore the psychological and physiological difficulties that athletes, particularly female athletes, endure.

“This situation highlights the need for more equitable and reasonable standards that prioritize athletes’ well-being,” Usha stated. “The IOA is investigating other legal possibilities and wholeheartedly supports Ms. Phogat. We are dedicated to making sure that justice and fairness in sports are maintained, as well as that Vinesh’s cause is heard.”

The IOA also expressed gratitude to the public, athletes, and its stakeholders for their ongoing support and understanding in this situation.
