Jay Shah to Lead Global Cricket as ICC Chairman Starting December

The appointment of Jay Shah as the next head of the International Cricket Council (ICC) was announced on Tuesday. Shah will take over in December when the current chairman Greg Barclay’s tenure ends. He has been the Asian Cricket Council’s head since January 2021 and the BCCI secretary since October 2019.
Shah, who is 35 years old, is the youngest chairman in the ICC’s history. Other Indian leaders of the organization include Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.
Jay, the only candidate for the chairperson, stated that he intended to increase the sport’s popularity, especially in light of its impending participation in the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
Shah said, “I am humbled by the nomination to the International Cricket Council as Chair.”

“I’m determined to further globalize cricket by collaborating closely with the ICC staff and our member countries. At this pivotal moment, it is more crucial than ever to encourage the adoption of cutting-edge technology, strike a balance between the coexistence of many forms, and expand the reach of our major events into new international markets. Our objective is to increase cricket’s appeal and participation more than in the past.

“To elevate the love for cricket worldwide, we must embrace fresh thinking and innovation in addition to building on the invaluable lessons learned,” he continued. The fact that cricket will be competing in the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028 marks a pivotal moment in the history of the sport, and I have no doubt that it will advance in ways never seen before.
Barclay said earlier this week that, on November 30, when his time as ICC chairman comes to an end, he will choose not to run for a third term. The New Zealand-based lawyer has served four of the three terms of two years that are available to an ICC chairman.
“ICC Chair Greg Barclay informed the Board that, at the expiration of his present term at the end of November, he will not seek reelection. Prior to being re-elected in 2022, Barclay was selected as the Independent ICC Chair in November 2020, according to a media statement from the ICC.
