Dawid Malan announces retirement from international cricket

At the age of 37, former England batter Dawid Malan announced his retirement from international cricket. The former number one T20I hitter for England participated in 22 T20Is, 30 ODIs, and 30 Tests. Along with Jos Buttler, he was one of only two hitters for the men’s squad from England to register hundreds in all three forms of international cricket. Following the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023 in India last year, the 37-year-old was left off of the England team’s roster. Following his exclusion from the England selection for the white-ball series against Australia, Malan announced his decision.

With 78 from 44 in his T20I debut against South Africa in 2017, Malan made his debut in international cricket. One of his most noteworthy innings was his first and only Test century, which he got in Perth, Australia during the 2017 Ashes match, sharing the score with Jonny Bairstow with a total of 140 runs off 227 balls. On the other hand, Malan thrived most in the shortest format. His flashy style of run-making helped him make it into England’s T20I squad following their victory at the 2019 ODI World Cup.

But he really rose to prominence in the T20I format, especially after England won the ODI World Cup in 2019. His run-scoring prowess, which included a 48-ball century at Napier during the team’s winter tour of New Zealand, forced him into the team’s 20-over plans.

In September 2020, he rose to the top of the ICC men’s T20I batting rankings. A few months later, in March, he became the first men’s player to hit 1000 runs in the game’s shortest format in just 24 innings. Despite missing the knockout rounds of the T20 World Cup 2022 after tearing his groin while fielding against Sri Lanka, Malan was a part of England’s successful campaign in Australia.
