However, Arhsdeep Singh held his nerves in the final over and sealed the victory for his team.
Shreyas Iyer’s Heroics Power Punjab to 243/5
Shubhman Gill from GT won the toss and decided to bowl first as Narendra Modi Stadium has a reputation of winning for chasing teams. Punjab Kings were led from the front by their captain, Shreyas Iyer. He played an explosive knock of 97* off just 42 deliveries. He hit five boundaries and nine sixes to lay the foundation of a grand total for GT.
Earlier in the innings, Priyansh Arya started aggressively for PBK and smashes 47 runs off 23 balls, which included seven boundaries and two sixes. Rashid Khan took the wicket of dangerous-looking Arya in the seventh over. After his wicket, the two key batsmen of PBK departed without scoring big. Wicketkeeper Prabhsimran Singh contributed just 5 runs, and Glenn Maxwell suffered a golden duck, which departed him on the very first ball he faced.
Afghanistan’s all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai (16) and Marcus Stoinis (20) played supporting roles for Shreyas Iyer and PBK. Later, the fireworks from Shashank Singh (44* off 16 balls) propelled the PBKS total to a daunting 243/5 in 20 overs. In the 17th over, Shreyas ruthlessly attacked Prasidh Krishna to take 24 runs in a single over and later in the final over, Shashank made 23 runs against Mohammed Siraj.
From Gujarat’s bowling attack, R Sai Kishore emerged as the most successful bowler. He took three wickets with just 30 runs of expenditure in his four overs. Kagiso Rabada and Rashid Khal supported him by taking one wicket each.
GT’s Chase Falls Short Despite Sai Sudharsan’s Brilliance
In the chase Gujarat Titans got off to a strong start as openers Shubman Gill and B Sai Sudharsan added 50 runs in just five overs. Gill, in particular, looked dangerous initially. He scored a quickfire 33 runs in just 14 balls before Glenn Maxwell took his wicket in the final over of the powerplay.
However, Sai Sudarshan took the responsibility of anchoring the chase for GT. He played a sensational knock of 74 runs with proper cricketing shots. Jos Buttler supported him and the duo made a crucial 54 runs partnership for the third wicket. After Sai’s wicket, Jos Buttler showed his class batting and made a valuable 54 runs in just 30 balls. Sherfane Rutherford also contributed a valuable 46 runs.
The turning point came in the 18th over when Buttler was dismissed. This shifted the momentum of the game towards Punjab Kings. Sherfane Rutherford tried his best to maintain the run rate as per required. But the total proved too big for the GT basting lineup. In the final over GT needed 27 runs to win. Arshdeep Singh displayed his experience of death bowling and stopped Gurjarat’s total to 232 runs. He conceded only 15 runs in the final over, this resulted in a thrilling win for PBK against GT.
