On Wednesday, May 7th, 2025, Rohit Sharma officially announced his retirement from Test cricket with immediate effect. He announced his decision through social media, where he has expressed his gratitude for representing India in whites.

Rohit also confirmed that he will continue to play the ODI format.

At 6:30 PM, rumours came up that the BCCI was planning to remove Rohit from the Test captaincy for India’s five-Test tour of England in 2025. Meanwhile, at 7:30 PM, Rohit announced his retirement from Tests through social media.

Test Career Highlights and Milestones

Rohit Sharma has played a total of 67 Test matches, including 24 as captain. He has scored 4301 runs, with 12 centuries and 15 fifties.

Rohit made his Test debut in November 2013 against the West Indies in Kolkata, where he scored his first Test century. His highest score was 212 against South Africa in Ranchi in 2019.

Between 2017 and 2018, Rohit struggled with inconsistent form and scored just one century in five years.

Later in 2019, he was promoted as opener against the South Africa Test Series and scored 529 runs in that series. Rohit was successfully transitioned from middle-order to one of India’s most dependable openers.

Test Captaincy and Leadership

Rohit Sharma was known for his calm leadership style and trusted the younger players. He took over the captaincy from Virat Kohli in early 2022. From 2022 to 2025, Rohit was the captain of the Indian Test team. He captained Team India for 24 Test matches. During his period, India recorded 12 wins, 9 losses, and 3 draws. In 2024, under the captaincy of Rohit Sharma, India won the England Series by 4-1 at home with a young squad.
