On Tuesday night (July 16), local media claimed that Dhammika Niroshana, a 41-year-old former cricket player for Sri Lanka, was shot and killed at his home in Ambalangoda, a tiny village in the Galle region.

Niroshana was shot at by an unidentified individual when he was with his wife and two children, according to the local police. The culprit has still eluded police. Although a comprehensive investigation is underway, the crime’s motivation is yet unknown.

Carrer of Niroshana

During his playing career, Niroshana a right-arm fast bowler who was also a useful batsman further down the order was considered a budding star.

Between 2001 and 2004, he represented the Galle Cricket Club in 12 first-class and 8 List A matches, amassing over 300 runs and taking 19 wickets.

In 2000, he made his debut for the Sri Lankan U19 team. He went on to play two years of under-19 Test and ODI cricket.

In ten games, he led the Sri Lankan U19 squad as captain as well. Under his guidance, athletes like as Farveez Maharoof, Angelo Mathews, and Upul Tharanga achieved success and represented Sri Lanka at the highest level.

But Niroshana’s career never really got off. In December 2004, he participated in his final match of competitive cricket.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka is getting ready to play host to India in a white-ball series. Following a dismal T20 World Cup in which the Wanindu Hasaranga-led team was unable to progress past the group stages, Sri Lanka will play the tournament winners in a three-match T20I series before moving on to a three-match ODI series.

The T20Is will kick off the series on July 27. In addition, the appointment of Gautam Gambhir as head coach will usher in a new era for Indian cricket. Along with being the first major series following the retirement of T20I mainstays Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja, this will also be.

With an eye on the domestic T20 World Cup in 2026, the Indian selectors want to name a new skipper for the Twenty20 Indians. Between Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav, it’s probably a tie.
