ICC AGM to Discuss Jay Shah’s Candidacy for Next Chairman
2 min readAt the four-day ICC Annual Conference in Colombo, which begins on Friday, all eyes will be on BCCI secretary Jay Shah. Serious talks may arise over when he will succeed New Zealander Greg Barclay as the world body’s chairman. It is anticipated that losses of over USD 20 million sustained by the international organization for holding T20 World Cup matches in the United States of America would take center stage at the ICC conference, which begins with the board meeting on Friday. The financial details of the event are not included on the nine-point agenda of the AGM (a copy of which is with the PTI); nevertheless, the board will examine them as a “post-event report,” which is a customary operating procedure.
India Pakistan Championship Controversy
The schedule also includes reports from associate member meetings, talks about ICC memberships, and a presentation of the ICC Development Awards in addition to the appointment of a new external auditor. The second significant issue, which is that India will not be visiting Pakistan to compete for the Champions Trophy, is not on the formal agenda for the ICC Board unless the chair permits it to be brought up under the heading “Any Other Business.” However, one of the primary topics of interest for everyone at the ICC, according to an ICC insider aware of the proceedings, is when Shah assumes leadership of the global organization.

“The question is not how, but when; he has one more year remaining as BCCI secretary before his constitutionally mandated cooling-off time with the Indian board begins in 2025. Barclay cannot, however, serve out his third two-year term from December 2024 to December 2026 if he must assume office in 2025, according to the ICC source. “There is a school of thought that what if ICC’s chairmanship term changes from three terms of two years each to two terms of three years, so the cumulative term can remain six years.”
Many people think that Shah can finish his six years as BCCI secretary and take over as ICC chairman in 2025 for three years, during which he will be cooling off at BCCI, assuming Barclay’s present term is extended to three years. He can then return and assume the role of board president in 2028.
