Rohit Sharma : On Sunday, January 14, during the second T20I of the current three-match series between Afghanistan and India, Indian captain Rohit Sharma made history. The 36-year-old tied MS Dhoni’s record of winning 41 T20I for India as captain and became the first Indian skipper to win 12 bilateral T20I series.

In the second T20 International of the current three-match series, India defeated Afghanistan by six wickets on Sunday, January 14. The hosts of the game at Indore’s Holkar Stadium defeated the opposition by four wickets in 15.4 overs to reach the goal of 173 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal opened the scoring for India with 68 runs off of 34 balls, and all-rounder Shivam Dube finished unbeaten with 63 runs off of 32 balls. Taking six wickets in their next match, the Men in Blue completed the T20I series.

For Indian captain Rohit Sharma, the second T20 International in Indore held particular meaning. The 36-year-old hitter achieved a historic first by playing 150 T20 Internationals. He left for a golden duck in the second T20 International, though, as he was unable to establish his account there either. But on Sunday, Rohit set a new record despite having a forgettable performance at the bat for the second straight game. In addition to matching the record of 41 T20I victories as India captain held by the great MS Dhoni, he became the first Indian captain to win 12 bilateral T20I series.

In addition, as captain he tied the global record held by Sarfaraz Ahmed, the previous captain of Pakistan, who won ten consecutive bilateral T20I series. In November 2021, following Virat Kohli’s resignation, Rohit was appointed India’s permanent T20I captain. However, Rohit led India in T20Is anytime Kohli was rested for the match, even before to taking over as captain of the team full-time.

With two T20I hundreds as captain, Rohit is the only cricket player in history to have participated in all eight T20 World Cups. Dec. 22, 2017, in Indore against Sri Lanka, he scored his first triple-digit total in a T20I as captain of India. During that particular match, he achieved the fastest century by an Indian batsman in T20 Internationals—35 balls. 2018 saw him get his second T20I century while leading India against the West Indies.
