US Open 2024: Indian Challenge Ends as Rohan Bopanna Falls in Mixed Doubles Semis

On Tuesday, September 3, Rohan Bopanna and his Indonesian partner Aldila Sutjiadi lost the mixed doubles semifinal, bringing an end to India’s US Open 2024 campaign. In a lopsided last-four match, Bopanna and Sutjiadi fell to the American duo of Donald Young and Taylor Townsend, 3-6, 4-6.

Bopanna and Sutjiadi had trouble staying consistent the entire competition. The breaking of Bopanna’s opening serve game put the Indo-Indonesian combination early in the match against the unseeded pair at a disadvantage. Sutjiadi and Bopanna fought back, but they were unable to maintain the momentum. All Donald and Taylor needed in the fifth game of the second set was a break of Bopanna’s serve.

To get to the semi-final, Bopanna and Sutjiadi prevailed in two third-set tie-breakers. They had defeated Matthew Ebden and Barbora Krejcikova, the fourth seeds, but they were outmatched by Townsend and Young.

Bopanna and Edben Eliminated

Bopanna and Ebden were eliminated in the men’s doubles Round of 16 earlier in the event. The Australian-Indonesian duo advanced to the US Open final the previous year. But they were eliminated early, losing 1-6, 5-7 to Argentinean duo Andrés Molteni and Maximo Gonzalez, the 16th seeds. The Australian Open winners were predicted to contend for the men’s doubles championship in New York, thus their loss came as a surprise.

There were four Indians in the US Open doubles field. Following an injury sustained by Yoshihito Nishioka during his singles campaign, Sumit Nagal’s opening round match against the Japanese player was canceled.

Top seeds Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos eliminated Yuki Bhambri and his French partner Albano Olivetti in the Round of 16. In the men’s doubles, N Sriram Balaji, another Indian, was unable to get past the second round.

In the meanwhile, last week in New York, Sumit Nagal lost in the opening set of his men’s singles campaign. Tallon Griekspor, a Dutch player, defeated him.
