Cristiano Ronaldo scored a vital goal in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Croatia in their Nations League opening on Thursday, marking his 900th goal in his career. After a deft ball from Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot gave Portugal the lead with a well-placed strike in the seventh minute.

Ronaldo attained his milestone after completing a beautiful cross from Nuno Mendes and tapping in from close range to increase Portugal’s advantage in the 34th minute. Prior to this, Ronaldo had not scored in any of Portugal’s five Euro 2024 games.

Just before the half, Dalot inadvertently redirected a Borna Sosa shot into his own net, giving Croatia a chance to respond. Portugal won even though the second half ended in a goalless draw.

Poland defeated Scotland 3-2 in Thursday’s other League A Group 1 match. On Sunday, Croatia will play Poland, while Portugal will play Scotland.

Throughout his remarkable career, Ronaldo has scored 450 goals from 438 games for Real Madrid, making him the most successful player in the league. Ronaldo has 131 goals to his credit for Portugal.

He has also scored goals for Manchester United (145), Al-Nassr (68), Juventus (101), and Sporting CP (5).

Ronaldo made a big splash when he was just 17 years old. In 293 games as a player for the United, he scored 118 goals. After that, in 2009, he moved to Real Madrid for a then-world record 94 million euros.

Ronaldo spent nine years as a member of Real Madrid after joining the team in 2009. He left the team to play for Juventus, where he went on to score more than 100 goals.

He resumed his career with the United, where he finished with 27 goals in 54 games.
