An historic turning point for Uttar Pradesh football was reached on Monday, September 2, at the first Kolkata Derby, which took place at Lucknow’s KD Singh Babu Stadium. Yogi Adityanath, the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh, addressed the occasion and made a number of noteworthy statements intended to advance sports in the region.

As two of Indian football’s long-standing rivals, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal, squared off on the pitch, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that the state government will do all in its power to improve football in Uttar Pradesh.

As a first step, Chief Minister Adityanath announced plans to build eighteen new football stadiums among the state’s eighteen commissariats. In addition, 827 football fields will be built in each block to improve the state’s football facilities and allow for additional competitions.

Kalyan Chaubey applauds Yogi for this step for football

Speaking prior to the Derby match in front of Chief Minister Adityanath, President of the All India Football Federation Shri Kalyan Chaubey emphasized the steps done by the Uttar Pradesh government to rebuild the KD Singh Babu Stadium in preparation for the major derby.

“I had the honor of meeting you (the UP CM) on August 8. I asked of you after seeing how much you loved and cared about football. As I mentioned earlier, the development of football in Uttar Pradesh would be aided by a Derby-style contest held in Lucknow. However, finding a suitable stadium for the game might provide challenges. To my utter amazement, however, it only took the UP government 19 days to refurbish the KD Singh Babu Stadium in time for the major event.

Football’s national growth would be accelerated, CM Adityanath promised, adding that the state government will assist in whatever manner it can.

“On behalf of the government and people of Uttar Pradesh, let me send a warm greeting to the teams of Mohun Bagan SG and East Bengal FC. We find it extremely significant that this important game is being played for the first time in Lucknow, the capital of our state. UP has partnered with the Khelo India program, which is led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and has been instrumental in advancing sports in India.
