Seasons of Fortnite in order: Start and finish dates

Fortnite launched its first season of battle royale game in 2017 and has flowed into each other since then, with every chapter marking a new era and every season introducing a unique theme.

Every season adds new weapons, items, map changes, gameplay enhancements, live events, collaborations, and of course, a plethora of cosmetics that have entered the catalogs of some of the rarest skins around. 

Chapter 6, which began on December 1, 2024, is no exception with players welcoming the return of Hitscan weapons along with the permanent addition of Fortnite OG mode and its first official FPS mode, Ballistic. 

While it is understandably exciting to hear that updates are coming, why not take a dip into the battle royale’s history to break down every Fortnite chapter and season since its launch thus far?

How many Fortnite seasons are there?

As of February 2025, Fortnite has released 34 seasons across six chapters, and the average number of seasons has decreased with time. The graph below represents the length and number of seasons for each chapter, which conveys this trend.

Note: Chapter 6 has been excluded from the presentation, as it opened in December 2024, and the exact number of seasons is not noted.

From the graph above, it may be seen that earlier chapters such as Chapter 1, with 11 seasons, and Chapter 2, with 8 seasons, lasted about 2 years, thus featuring more seasons compared with recent scenarios. In contrast, since then, they have typically enjoyed a year’s life span, albeit with a quicker seasonal cycle.

Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 both had one more season than Chapter 3, but each chapter’s fifth season consisted of a short, four-week throwback season—Season OG in Chapter 4 and Chapter 2 Remix in Chapter 5. As Fortnite OG will become a permanent experience, Chapter 6 is anticipated to return to the traditional pattern of four seasons lasting a year.

What is the average duration of a Fortnite season?

The average length of a Fortnite season is currently 80 days. Over the years, seasons have changed from those that started shorter and running more frequently to those which will now last about three months. 

The graph below, which indicates each Fortnite season and how long it lasted compared to others, clearly describes this trend:

Two shorter seasons, Season OG (Season 27) and Chapter 2 Remix (Season 32), lasted only 29 days, thus pulling the average somewhat down. However, Chapter 6 Season 1 will run for a total of 82 days, meaning that it ends on February 21, which is close to the average. 

Chapter 6 is also expected to be able to encapsulate four seasons within a year-long period, making it look as if every season in this chapter follows a similar pattern each lasting some three months.

Epic usually drops in mid-season updates and patches, making space for players to preview speculation on what to expect in the next Fortnite update, including teasers for any new content coming with Chapter 6 Season 2 as soon as the Hunters season is over.
