Ishan Kishan is an aggressive Indian wicketkeeper batsman renowned for his disposable demeanour at the crease and his aggressive batting style.

He was born in Patna, Bihar, on July 18th, 1998. Ishan started his cricket career by playing for the Jharkhand team. He showcased his batting skills well in the Ranji and the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Ishan was the captain of the India 2019 U-19 World Cup team.

IPL was the turning point for Ishan, and playing with franchises like the Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad helped him to polish his abilities. Later, he also got chances in the Indian international team in 2021 and performed well in the ODI format.

Ishan Kishan is said to be one of the promising young cricketers in India with the capability of influencing the game across all formats.

Early Life

Ishan Kishan was born on July 18th, 1998, in Patna, Bihar, in a middle-class family. His full name is Ishan Pranav Kumar Pandey Kishan. Ishan’s father was a well-known builder in Patna. His passion for cricket started from a young age when he was playing cricket with his friends. He attended the Delhi Public School in Patna while playing cricket and balancing academics.

Ishan played for the Jharkhand team in the domestic format of cricket and stood out as a talented young player. Then he took the formal cricket training in Ranchi and later joined the state-level age-group teams.

Domestic Career

Due to the conflict of interest between the Bihar Cricket Association and the BCCI, Bihar was not regularly featured in domestic tournaments. Therefore, Ishan Kishan began his domestic cricket journey with the Jharkhand Cricket Team in 2013 at the age of 15.

Ishan was one of the consistent performers in the Jharkhand team. But his performance came to the limelight in the 2016-17 Ranji Trophy; Ishan Kishan scored an outstanding 273 runs against Delhi. This was one of the highest scores made by the Jharkhand player in Ranji Trophy history. Therefore, he was also one of the highest run scorers for Jharkhand in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy with 484 runs in 6 matches and the 2018-19 Vijay Hazare Trophy with 405 runs in 9 matches.

In 2024, Kishan was appointed as the captain of Jharkhand for the Ranji Trophy and also performed well with leadership in the following Duleep Trophy.

International Career

Ishan Kishan made his international debut by playing a T20I against England on 14 March 2021. In his debut match, he impressed with a half-century by scoring 56 off 32 balls and also won the Player of the Match award.

On 18 July 2021, Ishan made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka and scored 59 off 42 balls. Later on 10 December 2022, he scored an ODI double century against Bangladesh, where he scored 210 runs off 131 balls. This was the record by the youngest player to score an ODI double century and also one of the fastest double centuries in ODIs, with 126 balls.

Ishan Kishan made his Test debut on 12 July 2023 against the West Indies and scored an unbeaten 52 runs. Kishan emerged as one of the key assets for India in the multi-format squad.

IPL Career

Ishan Kishan made his IPL debut by playing for the Gujarat Lions in 2016. He was bought by the Gujarat Lions for Rs 36 lakhs. Ishan played for two seasons (2016 and 2017) for GL before the team was dissolved.

Then, in 2018, Ishan was acquired by the Mumbai Indians for Rs 6.2 crores and played for the franchise until 2024.

Ishan’s performance in the IPL 2020 was outstanding, with a total of 516 runs with a strike rate of 145.76. He was the top scorer for the MI that season with the most sixes (60) in the tournament.

In the 2022 auction, he was acquired by the Mumbai Indians for Rs 15.25 crore, which was the second-most expensive Indian player in IPL auction history at that time.

In the IPL 2025 mega auction, he was released by the MI, and he was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 11.25 crore.
