An unfortunate news has popped up recently. The star pacer of the Mumbai Indians, Jasprit Bumrah, is expected to miss the initial set of matches of TATA IPL 2025. Earlier, the news came that he will be playing the IPL this year, but now Mumbai Indians is facing a major setback. His recovery from the lower back injury that has kept him out of the game since January 2025 is still in progress.

When did this happen?

Bumrah suffered this injury during India’s tour of Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy on the second day of the fifth Test in Sydney. Due to the injury, he missed bowling in the second innings, which proved to be a major factor for Australia as they successfully chased the target of 162 with 6 wickets in their hands. Jasprit Bumrah was the highest wicket-taker on the tour, he took a total of 32 wickets in the series. India missed him in the Champions Trophy as well due to the injury. Although Bumrah’s name was mentioned in the provisional squad of India for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, in an unfortunate set of events, he failed to regain his full fitness in time.

Bumrah’s Recovery

According to our source, who is close to the development, Bumrah’s recovery is progressing well, but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials don’t want him to hurry. They want him to prioritise his long-term fitness so that he can play at his full capacity in the upcoming India’s crucial Test series against England in June.  The source mentioned that his recuperation is going fine, but it would be better to give him more time to return to his peak fitness.

Mumbai Indians Face Major Setback

The IPL season this year is starting on March 22 and is set to conclude on May 25, 2025. Bumrah is trying his best by increasing his workload day by day in the training simulations, but still, the BCCI’s medical team has not provided a specific timeline for his comeback.  Bumrah’s return is still uncertain, and this will create major problems for Mumbai Indian’s bowling attack.

Not the first injury

This is not the first time that Bumrah has suffered from a back injury. Two years back, in 2023, he suffered from a back injury, which led him to a surgery, due to which he was sidelined from playing for India for an extended time. The BCCI officials want him to reach his full fitness before starting back. One more injury in the same area could lead him to lifelong distance from the game. Thus, the chief selector for the Indian team, Ajit Agarkar, has advised Bumrah to take five weeks of complete “off-loading” until late January to reduce stress on his back.

This year, Hardik Pandya will lead the Mumbai Indians. The champion team has to bounce back from their disappointing 10th-place finish in IPL 2024. In such circumstances, the team is definitely going to feel the absence of their key player, Jasprit Bumrah. Without him, the team will have to rely heavily on Trent Boult, Corbin Bosch, and Deepak Chahar to provide them important breakthroughs with their bowling attack. Hardik Pandya himself will also have to take on the additional bowling responsibilities due to Bumrah’s absence.
