Nicholas Pooran’s Biography – Career, Stats, IPL Journey and Controversy

Nicholas Pooran was born on October 2nd, 1995, in Trinidad and Tobago. He is a left-handed batsman, bowls right-arm off-break, and also a wicketkeeper. Pooran is one of the hard-hitting batsmen who has played match-winning knocks for the West Indies team. Hence, in the T20 format, Pooran has a strike rate close to 150.
Pooran also faced some allegations of ball tempering in the ODI match against Afghanistan in 2019, and then he was banned for the next four T20I matches.
He currently represents the West Indies cricket team in limited-over formats and plays for the LSG franchise in the TATA 2025 IPL.

Early Life and Domestic Career
Nicholas Pooran was from Kathmandu, Couva. He studied at Naparima College, San Fernando, and played for his school team. He actively participated in various underage and schoolboys tournaments and represented Trinidad and Tobago.
Pooran made his National Under-19 debut in 2012 at the age of 16 at the regional tournament. He made his debut for the West Indies under-19 team in the October 2013 bilateral series against Bangladesh under-19.
In January 2015, Nicholas Pooran suffered from ankle and knee injuries from the road accident and recovered from that after 2 years and played for the West Indies B Team in the 2018 Global T20 in Canada.

IPL Journey
- 2017: Bought by Mumbai Indians for Rs 30 lakhs but did not play any matches.
- 2018: In 2018, He Went unsold after setting a base price of Rs 50 lakhs.
- 2019: Bought by Kings XI Punjab for Rs 4.2 Crore. In that season, he managed to score 168 runs in 7 matches.
- 2020: In 2020, he was in the Kings XI Punjab. It was a Strong season for him. Therefore, he scored 353 runs in 14 matches.
- 2021: In 2021, he managed to score just 85 runs in 12 matches.
- 2022: Sunrisers Hyderabad bought Pooran for Rs 10.75 crore. In that season, he scored 306 runs in 14 matches.
- 2023: In the 2023 auction, he was sold to the Lucknow Super Giants for Rs 16 crore and scored 358 runs in 15 matches.
- 2024: This season was Pooran set a strong comeback by scoring 499 runs in 14 matches with an average of 62.37 and a strike rate of 178.31 for Lucknow Super Giants.
- 2025: Looking at his outstanding performance, Lucknow Super Giants retained him for the 2025 IPL for Rs 21 Crore.
International career
Nicholas Pooran made his initial T20I debut on 23 September 2016 against the Pakistan team, and in November 2018, he scored his first T20I Fifty (53*) in 25 balls against India.
Later, Pooran made his first ODI debut on 20 February 2019 against England.
In the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, Pooran was West Indies’ leading run scorer with 367 runs in 9 matches, and also scored his maiden ODI century of 118 against Sri Lanka.

Controversy
In November 2019, Pooran was found guilty of ball tampering in the ODI against Afghanistan, and then he received a ban for the next four T20I matches.
