Washington Sundar

Washington Sundar is an Indian international cricketer and all-rounder. He is known for his left-handed batting and right-arm off-spin bowling.

Sundar is widely recognised as a bowling all-rounder who contributes to the team with his economical bowling and also contributes crucial runs in the lower order. He is a powerplay specialist in the T20S who can bowl economically in early overs.

Despite facing injuries and competition for places, he remains in the game across all formats due to his multi-dimensional skills.

Early Life

Washington Sundar was born on 5 October 1999 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in a Tamil Hindu family. His father, M. Sundar, was a former cricketer. He was named “Washington” in honour of P.D. Washington, who supported his cricketing dream. His sister, Shailaja Sundar, is also a professional cricketer.

Sundar began practising cricket at the age of four. Initially, he was only the batsman. Later, he started practising the off-spin bowling inspired by Ravichandran Ashwin. He completed his schooling at St Bede’s Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School in Chennai. Later, he joined Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science.

Then, Sundar got a chance to represent Tamil Nadu in age-group cricket at a young age with his amazing skills. With the guidance and coaching from his father, Washington Sundar grew up as a disciplined and focused youngster, balancing academics and sports with dedication.

Domestic Career

At the age of 17, Washington Sundar made his first-class debut for Tamil Nadu on 6 October 2016 in the Ranji Trophy. Initially, he was only practising batting, but later transformed into an off-spin bowling all-rounder inspired by Ravichandran Ashwin. He scored his maiden first-class century against Tripura in the 2017-18 Ranji Trophy.

Owing to his strong performances, Sundar was selected for the 2016 ICC U-19 Cricket World Cup squad, where India finished as runners-up in Bangladesh.

On 29 January 2017, Washington Sundar made his T20 debut against Hyderabad in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. Later, on 31 January 2017, Sundar made his List A debut against Goa in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

Then Sundar got selected for the India C squad and got national-level recognition in the List-A format.

IPL Career

Washington Sundar started his IPL journey in 2017. He was picked as a replacement for Ravichandran Ashwin by the Rising Pune Supergiant. He made his IPL debut on 22 April 2017 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. In his debut season, he took 8 wickets in 11 matches and ended up as a runner-up in the IPL 2017.

Later in 2018, Sundar joined the Royal Challengers Bangalore for Rs 3.2 crore. He was used as a powerplay specialist in RCB. Sundar was a part of the RCB team from 2018 to 2021. For three years, he was retained by the RCB squad.

In the 2022 mega auction, he was released by RCB, and he was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 8.75 crore. In SRH, he played as a frontline all-rounder, contributing with both bat and ball. He was a part of the SRH squad from 2022 to 2024. At the 2025 mega auction, he was released by the SRH.

Gujarat Titans bought Sundar for Rs 3.2 crore in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, and he contributed with both ball and bat, where he played 6 matches, scored 133 runs, and got 2 wickets.

International Career

Washington Sundar made his ODI debut on 13 December 2017 against Sri Lanka. He took his first international wicket by dismissing Lahiru Thirimanne. Sundar was also part of the Indian team that won the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy. He represented India in 23 ODI matches and scored 329 runs and took 24 wickets.

On 24 December 2017, Sundar made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka. He became the youngest T20I debutant for India at 18 years and 80 days. Sundar has represented India in 54 T20I matches and has taken 48 wickets.

On 15 January 2021, Sundar made his Test debut against Australia at The Gabba. In his debut match, he took Steve Smith’s wicket and scored 62 runs in his maiden innings. Meanwhile, he formed a crucial 123-run partnership with Shardul Thakur, helping India secure a historic win. He represented India in nine test matches, scored 468 runs, and took 25 wickets.

Therefore, Washington Sundar was a part of the Indian team which won the 2023 Asia Cup by defeating Srilanka in the Finals.

He is also a 2022 Asian Games Gold Medalist, where He was part of the squad and featured in matches, helping the team secure comfortable wins leading to the final.
