Pakistan Eliminated from T20 World Cup 2024
3 min readIn its first-ever T20 World Cup, the United States of America created history by making it to the Super 8 round of the competition after their previous Group A encounter against Ireland at Lauderhill was abandoned on Friday without a ball being bowled. This washout not only guaranteed the USA’s unprecedented advancement from a challenging group to the next round, but it also dashed Pakistan’s ambitions. The 2009 winners were eliminated from the competition.
The Babar Azam-led team will play Ireland in their last group-stage encounter at the same location on Sunday, although the outcome of that contest has no bearing on the group rankings. If Ireland had defeated the USA, Pakistan’s sole chance of surviving the competition would have been intact. A different outcome would have resulted in their elimination, and that is precisely what occurred.
Even if Pakistan wins their last game against Ireland, they will still only have four points from the group stage, while the USA finished with five points from four games.

As a result, the United States qualified for the T20 World Cup in 2026, which India and Sri Lanka will co-host. On the day of the T20 World Cup final, the top eight teams from this group, together with the two hosts and the top two rated teams outside of this, will automatically advance to the following T20 showcase. In fact, there’s a chance that the unfavorable weather would cancel the whole Florida leg of the T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place at Central Broward Park here, prompting the local government to declare a state of emergency.
The match between Nepal and Sri Lanka washed out before the toss was even made just two days ago.Pakistan’s aspirations were dashed by the United States’ qualifying, but they only had themselves to blame after losing their opening two games in New York against the Americans and India, their bitter rivals.
With Ireland waiting in the wings, the Babar Azam-led team needed to win their final two games handily and defeat Canada by seven wickets. However, the match in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia, is now meaningless.
