After being knocked out for 180, New Zealand has gained 46 runs. For the most of the chase, Pakistan was in the running, but New Zealand prevailed because they maintained their composure. Pakistan had a great start under Saim Ayuib, with cameos from Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Rizwan, and Fakhar Zaman. Although Babar held one end and made a clean fifty, Pakistan needed a strong innings from one of Ayub, Rizwan, or Fakhar. That did not transpire, and ultimately the team gave in to the strain of the lengthy pursuit. Earlier, Daryl Mitchell scored 61 and Kane Williamson scored 57 to lead the squad to a commanding 226-8 victory.
In addition, he was short on playing time recently since he was away from New Zealand’s most recent T20 International series against Bangladesh, continuing his cautious comeback from a significant knee injury he sustained in April while participating in the Indian Premier League.
At the top of the order, Finn Allen hit 35 off 15 balls, including 24 runs (6, 4, 4, 4, 6) off the second over bowled by Pakistan skipper Shaheen Shah Afridi. Williamson was also in the early shadow of Allen.
After Allen was out, he batted cautiously at first, but Williamson quickly picked up steam to achieve his half-century from 40 balls with eight boundaries. On nine, Babar dropped him off of Abbas Afridi’s bowl, and on 39, Iftikhar Ahmed dropped him off of Usama Mir.
“I thought the partnerships we built throughout the middle with Kane and (Glenn Phillips) as well allowed us to build a platform to put the bowlers under some pressure which you always try to do at Eden Park,” Mitchell said. “Also the way the boys bowled at the end there was superb.”
