Suryakumar Yadav’s Appointment as India’s T20I Captain Over Hardik Pandya?
3 min readChief selection committee member Ajit Agarkar revealed on Monday the reasons for Suryakumar Yadav’s appointment as the new captain of the India T20I team, as opposed to Hardik Pandya, the vice-captain of the team that won the T20 World Cup in Barbados last month.
Following his retirement from the World Cup last month, Rohit Sharma’s announcement created a need for a new captain for India. In addition to being Rohit’s deputy in the T20 World Cup, Hardik was well-suited to assume leadership roles because he had led India in three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) and sixteen Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) in addition to his Indian Premier League (IPL) captaincy stints with the Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians.

Agarkar did, however, disclose that the selection committee’s main concern fitness was the reason Gautam Gambhir, the new head coach of India, wanted to consider alternative candidates.
Hardik is a crucial member of the team. He possesses skill sets that are really hard to come by. He has struggled with fitness throughout the past two years. As a selection and coach, it gets difficult. In the interim before the 2026 World Cup, we would want to examine a few issues. That presented the biggest obstacle. That was the idea that went into it. Before leaving for India’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka, he stated, “We wanted the one who is available all the time.”

Before, in October of last year, Hardik sustained an ankle injury during the 2023 ODI World Cup. This injury kept him out of play until the beginning of the 2024 Indian Premier League, when he made a comeback to captain the Mumbai Indians. His total number of T20I appearances since the beginning of 2022 is merely 46.
Suryakumar has Captained before and is a Deserving Candidate
Conversely, Suryakumar was the captain of the Mumbai state cricket team in the past. He captained India in two consecutive Twenty20 International series after the ODI World Cup last year, winning the first four games 4-1 at home against Australia and the second, 1-1 in South Africa.
After describing Suryakumar as “one of the most deserving candidates,” Agarkar assumed that the selection committee’s decision to pick him was influenced by the input the other Indian players provided.
“Suryakumar Yadav was appointed captain because he is among the most deserving candidates,” he stated. We have been receiving input from the changing area. He is among the world’s finest T20 batsmen, has an excellent cricket brain, and is the player most likely to play every game. Surya possesses the essential qualities required to be a successful captain.
Suryakumar’s first task as the Indian team’s official T20I captain will be leading the squad on a three-T20I match trip to Sri Lanka from July 27 to July 30. Additionally, it will be Gambhir’s first task as the new head coach. Although Shubman Gill, who helped India defeat Zimbabwe 4-1 earlier this month, has been promoted to vice captain, Hardik will not be participating in the series.
