Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer retires from international football

The illustrious 12-year career of Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer came to an end on Monday when he announced his retirement from international football at the age of 35.

During his stint, Sommer made his debut in 2012 and amassed 94 caps for Switzerland. Among his many accomplishments was his role in getting the Swiss team to the European Championship quarterfinals last month, when they were nearly eliminated in a penalty shootout by eventual runners-up, England. at addition, Sommer demonstrated his abilities at the World Cups of 2018 and 2022 as well as in Euro 2016 and 2020.

With his move from Bayern Munich to Inter Milan last year, Sommer began a new chapter in his professional career. In an extensive post on his official Instagram account, Sommer expressed how honored and privileged he was to be a member of the national team.

It’s time to say farewell after another incredible championship round at the European Championships in Germany, our neighbor, where I formerly played in the Bundesliga for years that will never be forgotten. I held great significance during my tenure on the national team. I proudly reflect on the numerous priceless experiences we had, including the thrilling games, our shared successes, and the hardships we overcame as a team. Since I was 15, the national team has played a significant role in my life. I competed in every World Cup and European Championship final round throughout my 10 years as the team’s number one, starting in the U16s and continuing through the U21s. We made it to the quarterfinals twice and the round of 16 four times.
