3 min readAB de Villiers said, India needs Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma to win the T20 World Cup.
Legendary cricketer AB de Villiers of South Africa has supported India’s choice to select Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in their Twenty20I team for the Afghanistan series. For the first time since the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 ended, Virat and Rohit were back in the Indian T20I team. A major step forward for the Men in Blue ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup is their inclusion.
Since Virat Kohli is handling the latter stages of his international career really well, AB de Villiers isn’t the slightest bit shocked that his close friend may participate in another T20 World Cup in a few months. Kohli, who last participated in a T20 match in November 2022 in Adelaide during the exhibition match’s semi-final against England, has returned to the national team for the Afghanistan T20Is and will play the remaining two matches.
In the T20I against Afghanistan, which start on Thursday, Rohit Sharma will captain the Indian team. Along with a variety of all-round players including Shivam Dube, Washington Sundar, and Axar Patel, the team’s wicketkeepers are Jitesh Sharma and Sanju Samson. Together with pacers Avesh Khan, Arshdeep Singh, and Mukesh Kumar, leg spinners Ravi Bishnoi and Kuldeep Yadav make up the bowling unit.
What De Villiers Stated !
“I was in a similar position at the back-end of my career and it didn’t work out for me. It’s working out for Virat and Rohit and I think it’s the right move, a smart move as you want your experienced players to be out there and they have been there and done it before and they can try to win World Cup for you,” De Villiers added.
“I am not surprised at all. I am very happy for Virat and Rohit. You want to get your best team out there to win the T20 World Cup. Yes, I understand the criticism out there that youngsters have been missing out and guys who have been playing all the time,” De Villiers was quoted as saying by the news agency PTI.
“Virat grew up with cricket in his blood and that keeps him going. Same thing that kept me going and towards the end of my career when fire started burning out that’s when I called it a day. I think he has got a fantastic balance in his life with his family and spends a bit of time with them. He has started managing his career well which I could have done better towards the end of my career,” De Villiers further said.
On his official YouTube channel, he stated, “If Virat Kohli is good enough, he has to play. I don’t care whether he is managing his career a little bit because he is a touch older. But 20-year-olds will understand that the legendary Rohit and Virat are needed to help India win the T20 World Cup.”
