Ollie Pope : Profile, Stats, Record, ICC Ranking
3 min readOllie Pope : Profile
Ollie Pope, a slick right-handed hitter, flourished under the Stokes-McCullum tandem. As a valuable representative of England’s constructive style of play, he has advanced the game.
He has been an integral part of their remarkable run in the longest format, holding the pivotal No. 3 position. Pope signed with Surrey at the age of eighteen in August 2016 to start his career in domestic cricket.
For the first time since the Second World War, Surrey selected four youngsters in a Championship match. Pope played his maiden county match at The Oval against Middlesex. In his third match at the Ageas Bowl against Hampshire, he scored his maiden century in county cricket.
Given that Hampshire was about to win and Pope blocked their path by refusing them a wicket on the last day, this was an especially impressive effort. Pope made his debut on the List A scene in 2016 as part of the victorious team that had five expert keepers in the crucial Royal London Cup semi-final.
He made his T20 debut for Surrey on July 7, 2017, during the 2017 NatWest T20 Blast.
After a successful season in all three formats in 2017, the team quickly promoted Pope to the Test squad. Although he had played at six for Surrey, the selectors chose him to bat at No. 4 against India for his Test debut the following year.
Despite getting starts in all three of his innings of play, he was unable to leave much of an impression. However, Pope’s 986 runs at an average of 70.43 during Surrey’s championship-winning season had an influence on the domestic scene.
A shoulder injury interrupted Pope’s ascent in 2019, forcing him to take a break from the game. But he came back strong, winning his first Championship comeback game with an undefeated 221 points.
He also returned to the Test team for the New Zealand trip. He was outstanding on the next tour of South Africa, recording his maiden Test century and helping England win at Port Elizabeth.
In addition, he scored fifty in their victories in Cape Town and Johannesburg, where they completed the series 3-1. He excelled when given the opportunity to return to his comfortable No. 6 position.
Following a stellar showing in South Africa, Pope’s form declined. The runs stopped coming in a tough two years, and he was even taken off the squad. But an opportunity to bat at three in England’s red-ball revolution led by Stokes and McCullum changed his fate.
In addition to his bat skills, Pope has become a vital member of the team’s locker room, stepping in to lead during a warm-up match on the 2023 trip to New Zealand while Stokes rested.
