Ishan Kishan : In the series finale, Sanju Samson, who replaced him in the ODIs against South Africa, left a powerful impression by hitting the game-winning century. Samson’s performance also secured him a spot in the T20I team for the series against Afghanistan. In the Centurion Test, KL Rahul struck a brilliant century, taking over as wicketkeeper for the first time in Test cricket. To exacerbate Ishan’s concerns, head coach Rahul Dravid hinted that Ishan could need to go back to the local circuit in order to be considered for the Indian team before the opening T20 international.
His replacement in the ODIs against South Africa, Sanju Samson, made a big impression by scoring the game-winning century in the series finale. Samson’s knock earned him a spot in the T20I team for the series against Afghanistan. In Test matches, KL Rahul assumed the job of wicketkeeper and struck a brilliant century in the Centurion Test. Ishan’s concerns were exacerbated when head coach Rahul Dravid hinted that Ishan could need to play in his own country to gain a spot in the Indian squad prior to the opening T20 International.
Ishan hasn’t played cricket for more than a month, and given Dravid’s recent comments, it seems unlikely that he would be included in the England Test team. Ishan has not yet declared himself available for selection to the Jharkhand state squad, according to PTI.
Ishan still has opposition in T20Is as well. Prior to the T20 World Cup, Jitesh Sharma has emerged as the leading contender for a wicketkeeping position. In Thursday’s opening encounter against Afghanistan, Jitesh scored a rapid 31 runs off of only 18 deliveries, which was crucial in helping India chase down a 159-run goal in Mohali. Jitesh is still very much at the top of the hierarchy after showing promise in his few appearances for the Indian side.

Virat Kohli’s comeback to the T20I team last week only serves to exacerbate Ishan’s concerns. Due to personal circumstances, Kohli was unable to play in the first T20 International against Afghanistan; however, the veteran batsman is anticipated to return for the second match in Indore, where he is slated to assume the no. 3 position in the batting order. In November 2023, Ishan batted at number three in his last T20 International Series against Australia. Currently, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli are vying for slots in the top order, with Rahul Dravid appointing Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal as the opening combination.
